Nationally known for her work and leadership in cardiovascular prevention efforts, Dr. Marian Limacher, professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine, was named the Suncoast Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine Research on Oct. 29.
Limacher is an outstanding role model for women who desire a career in cardiovascular medicine, said Dr. Edward R. Block, a distinguished professor and chair in the department of medicine.
She hopes to continue to uphold the standards of the professorship’s previous recipient, Dr. Carl J. Pepine, eminent scholar emeritus and professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine, Limacher said.
“His legacy in research is pretty remarkable,” she explained. “It’s such an honor to take over that position and for the department to provide this professorship.”
The professorship supports research in cardiovascular medicine that’s focused on the mission of the American Heart Association – building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Although she has participated in many collaborative research programs, Limacher enjoyed working most on the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-term national health study that focuses on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, and osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women, she said.
“The WHI has refined the way we think about observational research and clinical trials,” Limacher explained. “Our findings on hormone treatment upended traditional thinking and have changed clinical practice. I feel fortunate to have been part of this landmark study and hope to continue to contribute as we extend our follow-up of the dedicated women who enrolled.”
Limacher’s 24-year career at the UF College of Medicine embodies clearly that mission, Block said to faculty and staff in an e-mail congratulating Limacher.
“She has demonstrated her devotion to the prevention of cardiac disease, particularly in women and the elderly, throughout her career,” he added. “Her research, speaking, mentoring and teaching interests focus on prevention and health maintenance, concepts that dovetail with the intention of the chair.”
