Wimbledon finalists, semifinalists and quarterfinalists recently visited Gainesville thanks to the efforts of UF’s associate university counsel for research and health affairs, Dianne Farb, and her husband, Ron Farb.

Co-founders of the Climb for Cancer Foundation, the Farbs help raise funds for the College of Medicine’s pediatric oncology division and UF Shands Cancer Center.

The weekend-long inaugural tennis tournament, clinic and exhibition took place at the beginning of February and raised approximately $5,000 for cancer care and research.

“Saturday evening brought an exciting doubles exhibition,” said Mrs. Farb, describing a match involving MaliVai Washington, a Wimbledon finalist; Ricardo Acuna, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist; Todd Martin, a U.S. Open finalist and Wimbledon semifinalist; and Brian Gottfriend, a Wimbledon and a French Open doubles champion.

Approximately 400 spectators watched the match, with Washington and Acuna edging out Gottfried and Martin by a final score of 6-4, 7-6. Following the match, local tennis pros conducted a tennis clinic.

The Climb for Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, helps ease the pain and suffering of those affected by cancer. The foundation funds psycho-social programs which provide support to the patient and their families, sponsors research grants, and gives children with cancer opportunities to attend summer and sports camps.

The Climb for Cancer Foundation looks forward to their upcoming fundraising events including its annual black-tie gala themed “An Evening in Africa” at the UF’s President’s house on Saturday, Feb. 21.
