More than 45 faculty, family and friends gathered on June 19 at the University of Florida President’s House to honor the first two recipients of the C. Craig and Audrae Tisher Chair in Nephrology: Charles S. Wingo, M.D., and David Weiner, M.D.

“It was a very enjoyable event,” said Dr. Craig Tisher, former dean of the College of Medicine. “I think everyone understood the purpose of the event in honoring these first recipients.”

Dr. Wingo joined the department of nephrology in 1981 after completing a three-year fellowship in nephrology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

“Dr. Wingo is viewed as the consummate clinician,” said Tisher, in his speech honoring him. “He is greatly admired by our housestaff and fellows and is highly respected by his clinical colleagues in the College of Medicine.”

Joining the faculty in 1990 as an assistant professor in medicine, Dr. Weiner completed his residency in internal medicine in 1987 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

“He has contributed significantly to the educational programs of both the college and division,” said Tisher. “His outstanding credentials as a teacher are widely known, admired and appreciated by his colleagues, friends and especially by the medical students and residents.”

Dr. Tisher said that he was very pleased the co-recipients were selected, especially since he recruited both of them while he was division chief of nephrology, hypertension and transplantation.
