Dr. Timothy C. Flynn has been named senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the University of Florida College of Medicine and chief medical officer for Shands at UF.
In both roles, Flynn will help department chairs and clinical faculty and staff achieve highest-quality, patient-centered care for hospitalized patients. He will also serve as a point person for planning and implementing quality and patient safety initiatives, areas he has focused on throughout his career at the College of Medicine, and especially during the past two years while serving as interim senior associate dean for clinical affairs in the College of Medicine. As the Shands at UF chief medical officer, Dr. Flynn will have a reporting relationship to Shands CEO Timothy Goldfarb. He will join the hospital’s senior management team, collaborating closely with Edward Jimenez, chief operating officer, and Irene Alexaitis, chief nursing officer.
“Throughout his tenure at UF, Dr. Flynn’s tireless efforts have never wavered from a singular focus — quality care for our patients and the highest educational standards for our students, residents and fellows,” said Dr. Michael L. Good, dean of the UF College of Medicine and the Folke H. Peterson Dean’s Distinguished Professor. “He has distinguished himself nationally as a leader in medical and graduate medical education and as a clinician who is helping the college and the hospital better align resources and processes for the benefit of the patients we treat, and the faculty, staff and students who work and learn here.”
In his 26 years with the college, Dr. Flynn has filled a number of leadership roles, including chief of surgery at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center, program director for the general surgery residency and associate dean for graduate medical education. A professor of surgery, he has distinguished himself nationally in graduate medical education and academic surgery. He has recently been elected chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s board of directors, a position he will assume later this month. In addition, he is vice chair of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and is a past chair of the American Board of Surgery and former president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and the Association of VA Surgeons.

Flynn graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1971 and earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1974 with honors before joining the U.S. Navy. After his Navy service, he completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and then served as an assistant professor there for four years before joining UF in 1984. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has served as president of the Alachua County Medical Society. He has held several national appointments with the VA.
