William M. Miles, M.D., F.A.C.C., professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine and director of clinical cardiac electrophysiology, is the inaugural recipient of the Silverstein Endowed Chair for Cardiology Education.

The newly established fund, which is intended to support a faculty member in the division of cardiovascular medicine who is dedicated to the education of cardiology fellows, was given in honor of Dr. Burton Silverstein, a long time community cardiologist in Gainesville, Fla.

Before joining the UF faculty in 2005, Miles spent 15 years at Indiana University. He is internationally recognized in the field of electrophysiology, and was part of the founding group of physicians that originated the entire discipline.

“He is the main reason many talented young physicians from all over the world choose the University of Florida to receive training in electrophysiology,” said Jamie Conti, M.D., professor and chief of medicine in the division of cardiovascular medicine.

During his career, Miles has published nearly 60 original research articles and been invited to serve on various committees, including the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology.

In addition to clinical cardiac electrophysiology, Miles’ other areas of expertise include catheter ablation of cardiac rhythm disturbances and implantable cardiac devices.

Miles has received numerous honors and awards for his excellence in education, including the Charles Fisch Cardiology Fellows’ Teaching Award, the 2008 UF Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2009 UF Department of Medicine Excellence in Mentoring Award and the 2010 UF College of Medicine Exemplary Teachers Award.

Miles is not only dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians, but also to discovering new ways of educating physicians better.
