A night with the Chapman Society 'family'

Nina Stoyan-Rosenzweig, director of the COM’s Medical Humanities Program, presents fourth-year medical student, Monique Dieuvil, with a Special Award for her work with the Medical Humanities and Clinical Practice course for which she created the standardized patient program.

The College of Medicine’s Chapman Society banquet and induction ceremony was like a family reunion. There were those who were family by birth, those who considered themselves family by having shared experiences and families that were spun from grieving the loss of a loved one.

“We really thank everyone at the University of Florida and the department of surgery, and feel this university is a family to us,” said Curtis Walters, with his wife, Margaretta, by his side.

Tears welled in everyone’s eyes on Tuesday as the Walters accepted an induction certificate on behalf of their late son and COM alumnus and surgery resident, Hugh A. Walters, M.D, who died in a car accident May 2008.

“Hugh is the guy to follow, the guy to be around and the guy to be like,” said Darrell L. Hunt, M.D., Ph.D., a general surgery resident and the 2009 Hugh A. Walters, M.D., Humanitarian Award recipient. Hunt was one of five residents inducted into the Chapman Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society at the banquet held at the Paramount Hotel and Conference Center March 2.

Following the Chapman Society tradition of recognizing medical students, residents and faculty whose behavior exemplifies humanism and compassion in medicine, Dr. Robert Watson, former senior associate dean for educational affairs, announced the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards.

The Leonard Tow award was named after the self-made philanthropist who earned both his master’s degree and doctorate while working as an educator at Hunter College in New York. The award is presented to the student and faculty member who best demonstrate the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s ideals of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families, and health-care colleagues, as well as demonstrate clinical excellence.

Accepting the awards were Patricia L. Abbitt, M.D., a professor in the department of radiology and chief of the abdominal imaging division for the College of Medicine, and fourth-year medical student, Ana Turner.

“Keep doing what you are doing,” said Dr. Michael L. Good, dean of the College of Medicine as he addressed all inductees, special award recipients and faculty.

“Keep making a difference.”

College of Medicine medical students, residents and faculty were inducted into the Chapman Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society Tuesday, March 2. Posing with them is Dr. Robert Watson, former senior associate dean for educational affairs.
