The College of Medicine Office of Minority Affairs will host a guest lecture Wednesday, Dec. 15, featuring Deborah Deas, M.D., M.P.H., a professor of psychiatry at  Medical University of South Carolina and an expert in diversity in medicine. Her lecture, titled “Developing and Implementing a Comprehensive Diversity Plan,” will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the DeWeese Auditorium at the UF McKnight Brain Institute.

Deborah Deas, M.D., M.P.H.

Deas, senior associate dean for diversity and associate dean of admissions in the College of Medicine at MUSC, is board-certified in adult psychiatry, child/adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. She has conducted pharmacotherapy trials for the treatment of adolescents with alcohol dependence, depressive disorders and anxiety disorders. She has expertise in cognitive-behavioral therapy and has developed a cognitive-behavioral therapy manual for adolescents with substance abuse disorders.

Deas  received the Golden Apple Award for Teaching in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at MUSC and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outstanding Mentor Award, as well as the Jeanne Spurlock Diversity and Culture Award. She is the recipient of the 2010 Early B. Higgins Achievement in Diversity Award at MUSC and has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America” for 2007, 2008 and 2009.
